What Happened to Adventureland?

Adventureland encompasses two distinct and popular amusement parks in the United States, each with its own unique history and recent developments. The most prominent, Adventureland Park in Altoona, Iowa, has been a staple of Midwest entertainment since its grand opening in August 1974, founded by Jack Krantz. For decades, it remained a family-owned and operated business, evolving into a major regional attraction known for its diverse array of rides, including several roller coasters and the Adventure Bay water park.

A significant turning point for Adventureland Park (Iowa) occurred on December 21, 2021, when it was acquired by Palace Entertainment, a subsidiary of the global amusement park operator Parques Reunidos. This acquisition marked the end of the Krantz family's nearly 50-year ownership. Palace Entertainment immediately announced ambitious plans for expansion, committing to introduce ten new attractions over the subsequent two years, with eight slated for 2022 and two more for 2023. This period saw the addition of rides like Rockin' Rainbow, Bernie's Swing, and Lighthouse in 2022, followed by Draken Falls and Flying Viking in 2023. In 2024, the park reimagined its indoor wooden roller coaster, Underground, enhancing the guest experience.

Further changes in ownership came swiftly. On May 27, 2025, Herschend Family Entertainment officially acquired Adventureland Resort, along with all other Palace Entertainment properties, from Parques Reunidos. This transition brought Adventureland Park (Iowa) under the umbrella of one of the largest family-owned theme park operators in the U.S. The park continued its trajectory of investment, introducing the Hyperlight waterslide and two new stunt shows, 'Nerveless Nocks Jetpack Water Circus' and 'Off Axis Stunt Show,' in 2025. For its 2026 season, which commenced on May 16, Adventureland Park (Iowa) unveiled a robust event lineup, including the new 'Neon Nights' event at Adventure Bay, the 'Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show,' and 'The Canine Stars Stunt Dog Show,' alongside returning favorites and a new 'Hero's Corner' tribute area.

Separately, Adventureland Long Island, located in East Farmingdale, New York, has maintained its status as Long Island's primary amusement park since its opening in 1962. Founded by Alvin Cohen and Herb Budin, it has been owned by the Gentile family since 1987. In March 2024, Adventureland Long Island announced a significant $10-15 million, five-phase redevelopment plan, projected to update 10% of the property and be completed by 2028. The initial phases included the introduction of the 'Jr. Pirate Ship' and 'Moon Chaser' rides for the 2024 season. However, the 'Moon Chaser' was permanently closed in February 2026 for undisclosed reasons.

As of the 2026 season, which opened on March 20, Adventureland Long Island is continuing its redevelopment with the addition of three new rides: 'The Ram,' a pirate-ship style attraction replacing the 'Moon Chaser'; 'Wave Twister,' a spinning flat ride; and a new, wheelchair-accessible carousel. These investments underscore the park's commitment to modernizing its offerings while retaining its family-friendly appeal. Both Adventureland parks are actively operating and evolving, ensuring their continued presence as key entertainment destinations in their respective regions.
