What Happened to Alex Batty?

Alex Batty's disappearance began on October 8, 2017, when he, then 11 years old, failed to return to the UK from a pre-arranged holiday in Spain with his mother, Melanie Batty, and maternal grandfather, David Batty. Neither adult held legal guardianship of Alex, who was living with his grandmother, Susan Caruana, in Oldham, Greater Manchester. His grandmother reported him missing, and an international investigation was launched.

His mother, Melanie, was reportedly influenced by conspiracy theories and the 'sovereign citizen movement,' believing that governments aimed to enslave people, which led to their decision to live outside conventional society. Alex was kept out of formal schooling and was told to discard his passport and phone to avoid detection. He recalled periods of poverty, manual labor from age 14, and living in a tent during winter while his mother had a campervan. Despite the challenging conditions, Alex initially found the 'off-grid' life exciting, comparing it to being 'James Bond,' but it eventually became 'tiring' and 'repetitive'.

The turning point came in 2023 when Alex, then 17, decided he wanted a more traditional life and to attend college. He attempted to enroll in a school in Quillan, France, in November 2023 but was denied due to a lack of identity papers, though this report was not immediately followed up by authorities. In December 2023, he left his mother, who was reportedly planning to move to Finland, and began walking towards Toulouse. On December 13, 2023, he was found by delivery driver Fabian Accidini on a rural road near Revel, France, carrying a rucksack, flashlight, and skateboard. Alex told Accidini he had been walking for four days and had been kidnapped.

After his identity was confirmed, Alex returned to the UK on December 16, 2023, and was reunited with his grandmother. Greater Manchester Police launched a criminal investigation into his alleged abduction. However, in January 2025, the investigation was closed, with police citing a lack of family support and no realistic chance of prosecution. Alex had expressed that he did not want his mother or grandfather to face jail time.

As of May 13, 2026, Alex Batty, now 20, has successfully reintegrated into society. He has passed his Maths and English GCSEs, started college, and welcomed a baby girl in January 2026, becoming a father. His story is the subject of a new BBC documentary, "Kidnapped By My Mum," which aired on May 13, 2026. During the filming of the documentary, Alex made contact with his mother for the first time since his escape, sending her a text message expressing his love and understanding of her desire to protect him. He hopes to rebuild bridges with her at his own pace.
