Amir Iqbal Khan, born on December 8, 1986, in Bolton, Greater Manchester, rose to prominence as a prodigious amateur boxer. He began competing at age 11, quickly accumulating numerous national titles. His amateur career culminated in a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics in the lightweight division, making him Britain's youngest boxing Olympic medalist at just 17 years old. With an impressive amateur record of 101–9, Khan turned professional in 2005, quickly captivating fans with his exceptional hand speed and aggressive fighting style.

Khan rapidly ascended the professional ranks, securing his first major title, the Commonwealth lightweight title, in 2007.
