What Happened to Atlante Fútbol Club?

Atlante Fútbol Club, one of Mexico's oldest and most storied football teams, boasts a rich and often turbulent history marked by significant relocations, periods of success, and challenging relegations. Founded in 1916 as Sinaloa and officially becoming Atlante in 1921, the club quickly earned the nickname 'El Equipo del Pueblo' (The People's Team) due to its working-class origins in Mexico City. Atlante was a founding member of Mexico's professional Liga Mayor in 1943 and secured its first national championship in the 1946-47 season.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Atlante continued to experience highs and lows, including winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 1983. The club's financial stability and home base became recurring issues, leading to several moves. In 1989, after being sold to businessman José Antonio García, the team briefly relocated to Querétaro before being relegated and returning to Mexico City. A significant turning point came in 2007 when Atlante moved to Cancún, Quintana Roo, a decision partly driven by poor attendance in the capital. This move proved successful in the short term, as they won the Apertura 2007 Liga MX championship and subsequently the CONCACAF Champions League in 2009, earning a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup where they finished fourth.

However, the club's fortunes declined, culminating in relegation from Liga MX at the end of the Clausura 2014 tournament, ending a seven-year stint in the top flight. This marked the beginning of a twelve-year period in the second division, which was restructured from Ascenso MX to Liga de Expansión MX in April 2020. This restructuring controversially eliminated the possibility of promotion to the top flight, leaving Atlante and other ambitious clubs in a state of 'exile'. Despite this setback, Atlante became a dominant force in the Liga de Expansión MX, winning multiple championships, including the Apertura 2021, Apertura 2022, and Clausura 2024 titles.

In December 2024, Atlante was relocated to Zacatepec, Morelos, marking its fifth relocation. The club's owner, Emilio Escalante, who acquired Atlante in 2020, actively campaigned for the return of promotion and relegation, even appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in May 2025 alongside other second-division clubs. Escalante emphasized that a return to Liga MX required a solid, sustainable project. The long-awaited return to the top flight finally materialized in April 2026 when Atlante acquired the Liga MX franchise rights of Mazatlán FC, a club that had been founded in 2020 after the relocation of Monarcas Morelia. This acquisition, approved during a Liga MX owners' meeting, allowed Atlante to return to Mexico City and establish the Estadio Azteca as its new home stadium.

As of August 2, 2026, Atlante FC is officially back in Liga MX, competing in the Apertura 2026 season. Miguel Herrera has been appointed as the team's new head coach, tasked with leading the club in this new era. The club played its first home game of the Apertura 2026 season at Estadio Azteca on July 24, 2026, drawing 1-1 with Club América. Atlante's return is seen as a significant event for Mexican football, bringing back a historic institution to its rightful place in the top division.
