What Happened to Country Joe and the Fish?

Country Joe and the Fish emerged from the vibrant Berkeley, California, folk and protest scene in 1965, founded by Joseph Allen 'Country Joe' McDonald and Barry 'The Fish' Melton. Initially a folk duo, they quickly evolved into an electric psychedelic rock band, becoming influential figures in the San Francisco music scene. Their music, characterized by innovative guitar melodies and distorted organ, often carried pointed lyrics addressing counterculture themes like anti-war protests and free love.

The band gained national prominence after signing with Vanguard Records in 1966 and releasing their debut album, 'Electric Music for the Mind and Body,' in 1967. This was followed by their second album, 'I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die,' later that year, whose satirical title track became their signature anti-Vietnam War anthem. Their performances at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967 and especially at Woodstock in 1969, where McDonald famously led the crowd in the 'Fish Cheer' before the 'I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag,' cemented their place in rock history and the counterculture movement.

After releasing their final studio album, 'C.J. Fish,' in 1970, the band officially disbanded. McDonald embarked on a prolific solo career, releasing over 30 albums and remaining a consistent anti-war campaigner and advocate for veterans' rights. Melton also pursued a solo career, performed with other groups like Dinosaurs, and notably became a criminal defense attorney in California, retiring as Chief Public Defender of Yolo County in 2009, while still continuing to perform music.

The classic 1967 lineup reunited to record the album 'Reunion' in 1977. Later, a version of the band, the 'Country Joe Band' (minus Melton), toured from 2004 to 2006. In recent years, several original members have passed away: drummer Gary 'Chicken' Hirsh on August 17, 2021, and bassist Bruce Barthol on February 20, 2023.

The most significant recent development is the passing of co-founder and frontman Country Joe McDonald on March 7, 2026, at the age of 84, due to complications from Parkinson's disease. Despite these losses, Barry 'The Fish' Melton remains active in music. He performed as a guest at the Blue Wing Blues Festival in September 2025 and is currently undertaking a 'Farewell UK Tour' in August 2026. Melton is also scheduled to perform with David Bennett Cohen, another original member, as the 'last surviving members' of Country Joe and the Fish on August 29, 2026, in Woodstock, New York, continuing to celebrate the band's enduring legacy.
