What Happened to Daredevil?

The journey of Daredevil in live-action media has been a tumultuous yet ultimately triumphant one. The character first gained widespread critical acclaim with the Netflix series Daredevil, which premiered in April 2015 as part of the Marvel Television universe. Starring Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, the show was praised for its gritty tone, complex characters, and intense action sequences. It ran for three seasons, concluding in November 2018.

The cancellation of Daredevil on November 29, 2018, along with other Marvel Netflix series, was a significant turning point. While Netflix stated it was best to 'close this chapter on a high note,' the decision was largely attributed to a growing rift between Netflix and Disney, as Disney prepared to launch its own streaming service, Disney+, and regain control of its Marvel properties. A two-year embargo prevented the characters from appearing in non-Netflix projects immediately after cancellation.

Fans eagerly awaited the potential return of Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio to their iconic roles. This hope materialized when Kevin Feige confirmed in December 2021 that Cox would reprise Daredevil in the MCU. Cox made a surprise cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and later appeared in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022). D'Onofrio also returned as Kingpin in Hawkeye (2021) and both actors featured prominently in Echo (2024).

The official revival, Daredevil: Born Again, was announced in July 2022 for Disney+, initially planned as an 18-episode first season with a lighter tone. However, after initial filming and a production halt due to the 2023 WGA strike, Marvel Studios decided to overhaul the series in late September 2023. The creative team was replaced, with Dario Scardapane taking over as showrunner, and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as lead directors. The series was re-envisioned to be more serialized and directly connected to the tone and continuity of the original Netflix show, with the 18 episodes split into two seasons.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 premiered on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, with nine episodes, receiving positive reviews despite some noting the creative overhaul. Season 2 followed, premiering on March 24, 2026, and concluding in May 2026 with eight episodes. This season was largely seen as an improvement, depicting Wilson Fisk's ascent to Mayor of New York City and his subsequent declaration of martial law against vigilantes. The season ended with Matt Murdock being imprisoned for his actions as Daredevil.

CURRENT STATUS (as of 2026-07-31): A third season of Daredevil: Born Again was confirmed in September 2025. Filming for Season 3 commenced in March 2026 and officially wrapped in July 2026. This season is expected to adapt elements of 'The Devil in Cell Block D' storyline, with Matt Murdock beginning his journey in prison. It will also see the return of more characters from the original Netflix series, including Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Iron Fist (Finn Jones), Elektra (Élodie Yung), and Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), setting the stage for a significant street-level MCU crossover. The third season is anticipated to premiere in March 2027. Charlie Cox has indicated that Marvel's current focus for his character remains the Disney+ series, rather than immediate appearances in major Avengers films.
