What Happened to Espai Barça?

Espai Barça, meaning "Barça Space," is the comprehensive redevelopment project undertaken by FC Barcelona to modernize its entire sporting complex in the Les Corts neighborhood of Barcelona. Envisioned as early as 2007 by then-president Joan Laporta, the project gained official approval from club members in a 2014 referendum. Beyond merely renovating the iconic Camp Nou stadium, Espai Barça encompasses the construction of a new Palau Blaugrana (for basketball, handball, and futsal), a smaller auxiliary arena, an ice rink, a bus terminal, corporate offices, a hotel, and redesigned public spaces. The primary motivations behind this ambitious undertaking were to transform the club's aging infrastructure into a 21st-century facility, significantly enhance the fan experience, and crucially, generate substantial new revenue streams to ensure FC Barcelona's long-term financial stability and competitive standing in global football.

The project's financing model was designed to be self-sustaining, relying on the additional income generated by the new facilities rather than mortgaging club assets or depending on member contributions. In October 2020, club members approved financing of up to €1.5 billion for the project, secured through agreements with 20 international investors at an estimated average net interest rate of 5.53%. A significant early milestone was the completion of the Estadi Johan Cruyff, home to Barça B, Barça Women, and the U19s, which began construction in 2017 and opened in August 2019, marking the first completed piece of the Espai Barça vision.

Major renovation work on the Spotify Camp Nou itself officially commenced on June 1, 2023, following the end of the 2022-2023 season. This necessitated FC Barcelona temporarily relocating its home matches to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Montjuïc for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. The initial phase involved extensive demolition, including the complete removal of the third tier of the stadium. The club aimed for a partial return to the Camp Nou by December 2024, coinciding with its 125th anniversary, but this target was not met.

The Spotify Camp Nou partially reopened for matches in late 2025, albeit at a reduced capacity. By March 10, 2026, the Barcelona City Council granted the first occupancy license for Phase 1C, increasing the available capacity to 62,652 spectators. However, the project has not been without its challenges. President Joan Laporta expressed frustration in February 2026 over bureaucratic delays affecting the opening of certain stands. Furthermore, reports in June 2026 indicated potential cost overruns, with the club reportedly considering increasing its financing package by several hundred million euros due to inflation, additional structural work, and construction delays. The club also faced a €44 million interest payment on its loan in December 2025.

As of August 26, 2026, construction at Spotify Camp Nou is progressing rapidly. Recent updates show the final pillar for the massive compression ring has been installed, and the roof structure is visibly taking shape with 46 roof support pillars and 92 radial cables in place. Work continues on facade panels, surface work, and interior developments, including new corridors, changing rooms, and a press room. A new hybrid pitch installation was underway in July 2026 in preparation for the 2026/27 season. While the full completion of the Camp Nou was initially scheduled for June 2026, it is now expected in 2027, primarily due to the roof installation. The new Palau Blaugrana is still in the planning phase, with construction not expected to begin until the Camp Nou is finished, pushing its anticipated opening to 2028. The project aims to transform the stadium into a year-round destination, leveraging advanced AV and control infrastructure for various events.
