What Happened to Fantastic Four (Film Franchise)?

The cinematic journey of the Fantastic Four has been a long and often challenging one, beginning with Constantin Film acquiring the rights in 1986. An unreleased, low-budget film produced by Roger Corman in 1992 was primarily made to retain these rights. The first widely released adaptations came from 20th Century Fox, which sub-licensed the rights in 2004. The 2005 film "Fantastic Four" and its 2007 sequel, "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis, received lukewarm critical reception but performed moderately at the box office, earning a combined $635 million worldwide. The film also featured Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson as Galactus, with Robert Downey Jr. making a cameo as Doctor Doom in a post-credits scene.

As of August 2026, the Fantastic Four's presence in the MCU is expanding. A prequel comic series, "Fantastic Four: First Foes," was announced in January 2026, set to explore the team's early adventures against villains like the Mad Thinker, further building out their established history within the MCU. The main cast members—Pascal, Kirby, Quinn, and Moss-Bachrach—were confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026 to reprise their roles in "Avengers: Doomsday," scheduled for release in 2026, and "Avengers: Secret Wars" in 2027, indicating their central role in the ongoing Multiverse Saga. Furthermore, a sequel to "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" is already in development, with an untitled Marvel movie slot in December 2028 potentially earmarked for it. The D23 2026 event in August also hinted at a potential second Human Torch in the MCU, possibly related to the 'VisionQuest' series.
