What Happened to Fei Gaoyun?

Fei Gaoyun, born in August 1971 in Huai'an, Jiangsu Province, embarked on a political career that saw him ascend through various levels of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) administration. He received his education in radio technology from Yangzhou Institute of Technology and later earned a master's degree in public administration from Nanjing University, joining the CCP in December 1992.

His early career was rooted in Jiangsu, where he held positions in the Communist Youth League before moving into local government roles, including mayor and party secretary of Yizheng. He gained further experience in Nantong before his significant move to Changzhou in early 2013, where he served as deputy Party secretary and vice mayor. He was confirmed as Mayor of Changzhou in January 2014, becoming one of the first officials born after 1970 to hold a prefecture-level mayoral position in Jiangsu. He then became Party Secretary of Changzhou in February 2017.

In 2018, Fei Gaoyun was appointed Vice Governor of Jiangsu Province, a role he held until 2022, overseeing economic development and public administration. During this period, he also concurrently served as secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Political and Legal Affairs Commission from January to March 2021. A notable event during his tenure as vice-governor was an investigation launched in November 2019 by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision concerning alleged negligence related to a deadly chemical plant explosion in Yancheng, Jiangsu, in March 2019.

Despite the earlier investigation, Fei Gaoyun was transferred to Anhui Province in December 2022, where he became a member of the provincial Party committee standing committee and later served as executive vice governor. His career continued to advance, and in April 2025, he was appointed Party Secretary of Hefei, the capital city of Anhui. The following month, in May 2025, he also assumed the role of first secretary of the Hefei Garrison District Party Committee.

However, his political trajectory took a dramatic turn on May 6, 2026. China's top anti-graft authorities announced that Fei Gaoyun, then a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Anhui Provincial Committee and Party chief of Hefei, was under investigation for suspected serious violations of Party discipline and law. This ongoing investigation represents the most recent and significant development in his career, highlighting the CCP's continued anti-corruption efforts.
