Felicity Huffman, a celebrated actress recognized for her roles in 'Desperate Housewives' and 'Transamerica,' experienced a dramatic shift in her public and professional life following her involvement in the 2019 college admissions scandal, dubbed 'Operation Varsity Blues.' Huffman was among dozens of wealthy parents accused of illicitly influencing their children's college admissions.

The scandal came to light in March 2019 when Huffman was arrested by FBI agents at her California home and charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services fraud. Prosecutors alleged she paid $15,000 to William 'Rick' Singer, the mastermind behind the scheme, to have a proctor correct her daughter Sophia's SAT answers, thereby fraudulently inflating her score. Huffman later admitted to considering a similar scheme for her younger daughter but ultimately decided against it. In May 2019, Huffman formally pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, expressing deep remorse for her actions.

On September 13, 2019, Huffman was sentenced to 14 days in federal prison, a $30,000 fine, 250 hours of community service, and one year of supervised release. She reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, on October 15, 2019, and was released on October 25, 2019, serving 11 days due to a policy for inmates scheduled for weekend release. Her husband, actor William H. Macy, was not charged in the scandal.

In November 2023, Huffman broke her silence on the scandal in an interview with KABC-TV, stating, 'It felt like I would be a bad mother if I didn't do it.' She explained her desperation to give her daughter, who had a diagnosed learning disability, 'a chance at a future,' acknowledging the irony and her 'undying shame.' Her daughter, Sophia, later retook the SAT legitimately and was accepted into Carnegie Mellon University's theater program.

Since completing her sentence and community service in October 2020, Huffman has gradually re-entered the entertainment industry. In February 2024, she made her British stage debut in Taylor Mac's play 'Hir' at the Park Theatre in London. In April 2024, she secured a guest role as Dr. Jill Gideon in the second season of Paramount+'s 'Criminal Minds: Evolution.' Most recently, as of September 2025, Huffman joined the cast of the FOX medical drama 'Doc' as a series regular, playing Dr. Joan Ridley. The second season of 'Doc' is currently airing, with its finale scheduled for April 14, 2026. Huffman has also expressed support for a 'Desperate Housewives' reboot, 'Wisteria Lane,' led by Kerry Washington, and discussed a Lifetime movie, 'The Thirteenth Wife: Escaping Polygamy,' in May 2025.
