What Happened to Frank Farian?

Franz Reuther, known professionally as Frank Farian, was born on July 18, 1941, in Kirn, Germany. Raised by his mother after his father was killed in World War II, Farian initially trained as a cook before pursuing his passion for music. He began his musical career in the 1960s as a solo singer, achieving a number one hit in Germany in 1976 with his cover of 'Rocky'.

Farian's breakthrough to international fame came with the formation of Boney M. in 1976. He assembled a group of West Indian singers and dancers, while often providing the deep male vocals himself in the studio. Boney M. became a global phenomenon, charting worldwide with hits like 'Daddy Cool,' 'Rivers of Babylon,' and 'Rasputin,' selling millions of records and defining the Eurodisco genre.

The late 1980s saw Farian replicate this formula with Milli Vanilli, recruiting models Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan to front the group, while session singers provided the actual vocals. Milli Vanilli achieved massive success, including a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1990. However, the revelation that Pilatus and Morvan did not sing on their records led to one of the biggest scandals in music history, resulting in the revocation of their Grammy and widespread public backlash.

Despite the controversy, Farian continued to produce music, working with other successful Eurodance acts like La Bouche and No Mercy, and even producing Meat Loaf's 1986 album 'Blind Before I Stop'. In 2004, he authored a book criticizing fellow German producer Dieter Bohlen. Later in life, Farian resided in Miami, Florida. In 2022, he underwent heart valve surgery, which he credited with saving his life, but his health subsequently declined, leading to him using a wheelchair and breathing apparatus due to pulmonary issues.

Frank Farian died peacefully at his home in Miami on January 23, 2024, at the age of 82. His passing marked the end of a prolific career that spanned over six decades, during which he sold more than 850 million records and earned 800 gold and platinum certifications. His work continues to be recognized; a documentary series about his life and career was announced in September 2024, and his musical productions, such as Boney M.'s 'Rasputin,' were featured in a 2026 Hindi film. Additionally, Boney M. had a 'Final Curtain Tour' scheduled for Australia and New Zealand in April 2026, showcasing the enduring appeal of his creations.
