Gina Carano first rose to public prominence as a pioneering female mixed martial artist, competing in EliteXC and Strikeforce from 2006 to 2009, where she achieved a 7-1 record and was dubbed the 'face of women's MMA.' Her combat sports career paved the way for a transition into acting, landing roles in action films such as 'Haywire' (2011), 'Fast & Furious 6' (2013), and 'Deadpool' (2016).

Her acting career reached a new peak with her casting as Cara Dune in the Disney+ Star Wars series 'The Mandalorian,' which debuted in 2019. Her character quickly became a fan favorite, and she appeared in the first two seasons of the critically acclaimed show. However, Carano began attracting controversy for her social media activity. In late 2020, she was criticized for mocking mask-wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic, questioning the 2020 presidential election results, and seemingly mocking the use of gender pronouns by listing 'beep/bop/boop' in her social media bio.

The turning point came in February 2021 when Carano shared an Instagram post comparing the political climate for American conservatives to the early stages of the Holocaust, suggesting that neighbors were made to hate Jews before Nazi soldiers rounded them up. Lucasfilm swiftly responded, stating that Carano was no longer employed by the company and that her social media posts 'denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.' She was also dropped by her talent agency, UTA.

Following her firing, Carano announced a partnership with conservative media company The Daily Wire, stating she would develop, produce, and star in new film projects. Her first film with The Daily Wire, 'Terror on the Prairie,' was released in June 2022. In November 2021, she was also cast in 'My Son Hunter,' a biopic about Hunter Biden.

In February 2024, Carano filed a wrongful termination and sex discrimination lawsuit against Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company in federal court, alleging she was fired for expressing her conservative views while male co-stars who made liberal political statements faced no repercussions. The lawsuit was notably funded by Elon Musk, who had pledged to support individuals facing employment discrimination for their posts on X (formerly Twitter). Disney filed a motion to dismiss the case, which was denied by U.S. District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett. The dispute ultimately concluded in August 2025 when Carano and Disney/Lucasfilm reached a settlement. While the financial details were not disclosed, Carano expressed that it was 'the best outcome for all parties involved' and thanked Elon Musk. Lucasfilm also issued a statement acknowledging Carano was 'always well respected' and expressed openness to 'identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.'

As of September 2025, Carano announced her first major television project since her departure from 'The Mandalorian,' a new Vegas crime series titled 'Logan Reign.' She is set to star as the titular character, a legal assistant by day and a crime fighter by night, with producers known for 'Get Out' and 'BlacKKKlansman' attached to the project. The series is currently in development and has not yet been picked up by a network.
