What Happened to Gladys Knight & the Pips?

Gladys Knight & the Pips originated in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1952 as 'The Pips,' initially comprising Gladys Knight, her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight, sister Brenda Knight, and cousins Eleanor and William Guest. After some early lineup changes and their first hit, "Every Beat of My Heart," in 1961, they officially became Gladys Knight & the Pips. Their career truly soared after signing with Motown Records in 1966, where they produced classics such as "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (1967) and "If I Were Your Woman."

In 1973, the group moved to Buddah Records, a pivotal turning point that led to their only number-one pop hit, "Midnight Train to Georgia," which also earned them a Grammy Award. Despite contractual difficulties in the late 1970s that forced them to record separately for a period, they reunited and continued to achieve success with Columbia Records in the 1980s, including the Grammy-winning "Love Overboard" from their final album, "All Our Love" (1987). The group embarked on their final tour in 1988 and officially disbanded in 1989, with the Pips (William Guest, Edward Patten, and Merald "Bubba" Knight) largely retiring from performing.

Following the disbandment, Gladys Knight launched a highly successful solo career, releasing numerous albums and continuing to tour. She also ventured into acting and became known as the "Empress of Soul." The Pips members pursued other endeavors; Edward Patten and William Guest formed a production company, Guest and Patten Productions (later Crew Entertainment Company). Sadly, Edward Patten passed away in 2005 due to complications from diabetes, and William Guest died in 2015 from congestive heart failure. Original Pips member Eleanor Guest died in 1997, and Langston George in 2007. Merald "Bubba" Knight continues to oversee his sister's career as her tour manager and occasionally joins her on stage.

Gladys Knight has remained active and highly celebrated in the 21st century. She received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2022 and was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024. In July 2026, Knight co-headlined the "Just the Two of Us" tour with Smokey Robinson. However, in August 2026, at 82 years old, Knight announced via Instagram that she would be "easing into fewer performances" to focus on projects with her husband, William McDowell, and spend more time with her grandchildren. This decision followed public concerns about her health during recent performances, though her husband stated she has not been diagnosed with dementia and plans for a medical evaluation. Knight's official website still lists several concerts through November 2026, but the long-term impact on her touring schedule remains to be seen.
