The GMC Jimmy began its journey in 1970 as GMC's upscale counterpart to the Chevrolet K5 Blazer, entering the burgeoning SUV market. The project, which was reportedly shelved in 2018 to prioritize electric vehicle development, is now back on track due to factors such as relaxed fuel economy and emissions regulations and a scaling back of GM's electric vehicle plans.

The new GMC Jimmy is expected to be a midsize, body-on-frame SUV, likely sharing its platform with the current GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado pickup trucks (internally known as the VSS-T or 31XX-2 platform). It is anticipated to offer a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, with strong consideration for an optional V8 engine, a feature that would differentiate it from some key competitors. Design discussions are reportedly weighing a modern aesthetic against a retro look inspired by the original C/K Jimmy.
