What Happened to Halo Waypoint?

Halo Waypoint was first introduced in September 2009 as a website, quickly followed by an Xbox 360 application in November 2009, aiming to be a comprehensive portal for the burgeoning Halo universe. Its initial purpose was to centralize Halo-related news, community content, videos, and player statistics, offering a unified experience across various Halo titles. The Xbox 360 app, initially free for all Xbox Live members, later became exclusive to Gold subscribers and was updated with features like Kinect compatibility in 2012. This early iteration allowed players to track achievements and career milestones across games like Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach.

A significant turning point for Halo Waypoint came with the release of Halo: The Master Chief Collection in 2014, after which the Xbox 360 application received its last major update, though it remained accessible for several years. As the franchise evolved, particularly with the anticipation of Halo Infinite, 343 Industries initiated a major overhaul. In September 2021, a new visual and technical redesign, dubbed 'Waypoint vNext,' was launched, coinciding with the re-launch of dedicated iOS and Android mobile applications. This update aimed to provide a unified experience across web and mobile, offering deep integration with Halo Infinite for player customization, service records, and Battle Pass progress.

However, the lifespan of the re-launched mobile apps was relatively short. By May 2023, 343 Industries announced the decision to cease support for the Halo Waypoint iOS and Android applications, officially sunsetting them on approximately June 7, 2023. The studio cited a shift in user patterns, indicating that the vast majority of engagement was occurring on the mobile version of the halowaypoint.com website rather than the native apps. This decision consolidated all Waypoint features and content back onto the primary website, which continued to host game service records, file shares, leaderboards, franchise news, and HCS information.

Concurrently with these platform changes, the Xbox 360 version of Halo Waypoint became completely inaccessible on January 13, 2022, when all Xbox 360 Halo online services were shut down. Despite the discontinuation of its dedicated applications, the Halo Waypoint website has maintained its role as the definitive source for official Halo content. It has continued to evolve, integrating features like the Halo Infinite Content Browser in November 2022, allowing players to find and share community-created Forge content.

As of July 2026, Halo Waypoint remains a vibrant hub for the community. It regularly publishes news and updates related to ongoing Halo titles, such as the Firefight: Gauntlet Update for Halo Infinite in May 2026 and early access information for 'Halo: Campaign Evolved' in July 2026. Furthermore, the platform has become a home for new narrative content, with the 'Halo Waypoint Chronicles' short stories beginning in late 2022 and culminating in the release of 'Halo: Waypoint Chronicles Volume 1' in print in May 2026, collecting numerous stories and adding new exclusive tales to the Halo lore. This demonstrates Waypoint's enduring importance as both a functional utility for players and a narrative extension of the Halo universe.
