What Happened to Halyna Hutchins?

Halyna Hutchins, an acclaimed Ukrainian cinematographer, was tragically killed on October 21, 2021, during the production of the Western film 'Rust' at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The fatal incident occurred when actor and producer Alec Baldwin discharged a prop .45 revolver during a rehearsal, striking Hutchins in the chest and wounding director Joel Souza.

The immediate aftermath saw an outpouring of grief and a swift investigation by the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office. Authorities seized approximately 500 rounds of ammunition from the set, including blanks, dummy rounds, and suspected live rounds, indicating a severe lapse in safety protocols. The incident highlighted significant complacency and safety issues within the film's production.

Legal proceedings quickly followed. In January 2023, Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were charged with involuntary manslaughter. David Halls, the first assistant director, pleaded guilty to negligent use of a deadly weapon and received a suspended sentence and six months of probation.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed's trial ran from February 21 to March 6, 2024, where she was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter but acquitted of tampering with evidence. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison in April 2024 and was subsequently released on parole in May 2025, after serving 13 months of her sentence. Her parole is set to run through May 23, 2026.

Alec Baldwin's criminal case saw a more complex trajectory. His initial involuntary manslaughter charges were dropped in April 2023 but were reinstated in January 2024. His trial began in July 2024, but the charges were dismissed with prejudice just three days later due to a 'Brady disclosure violation,' as prosecutors were accused of withholding evidence that could have aided his defense. Despite the dismissal of criminal charges, Baldwin filed a malicious prosecution lawsuit against New Mexico officials in January 2025, which was reinstated and moved to federal court in October 2025.

Civil lawsuits have also been a major component of the aftermath. Halyna Hutchins' widower, Matthew Hutchins, settled a wrongful death lawsuit against Baldwin and other producers in October 2022 for an undisclosed sum, with Matthew becoming an executive producer on the 'Rust' film, which later resumed and completed production. In June 2024, Halyna's mother, father, and sister, who reside in Ukraine, filed a new civil negligence lawsuit against Baldwin and other producers. Furthermore, a civil lawsuit filed by 'Rust' gaffer Serge Svetnoy against Baldwin and the film's producers, alleging negligence and emotional distress, was allowed to proceed to trial in April 2026, with a trial date set for October 12, 2026. Several other crew members also settled their lawsuits against the producers and Baldwin in June 2025.
