What Happened to Hannah Gutierrez-Reed?

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed gained widespread public attention as the armorer on the set of the Western film 'Rust,' where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot and director Joel Souza was injured on October 21, 2021. The incident occurred when actor Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun that contained a live round during a rehearsal.

Prosecutors alleged that Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for weapons handling and safety, unwittingly brought live ammunition onto the set and failed to adhere to fundamental gun safety protocols, demonstrating an "astonishing lack of diligence". Her defense argued that she was unfairly singled out, citing her relative youth and inexperience as a head armorer, and placed blame on the ammunition supplier and Baldwin's handling of the weapon.

Gutierrez-Reed was officially charged with involuntary manslaughter on January 31, 2023. An initial firearm enhancement charge, which could have added five years to her sentence, was dropped in February 2023. Her trial commenced in February 2024, concluding on March 6, 2024, when a New Mexico jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter but acquitted her of a separate charge of tampering with evidence. In July 2024, following the dismissal of Alec Baldwin's involuntary manslaughter case due to alleged prosecutorial misconduct, Gutierrez-Reed's legal team filed motions for a new trial or to have her conviction overturned, arguing that prosecutors had withheld critical evidence. However, on September 30, 2024, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer denied these motions, ruling that the defense did not establish a reasonable probability that the alleged suppressed evidence would have led to a different verdict.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was released from the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility on May 23, 2025, after serving approximately 13 months of her 18-month sentence, receiving credit for good behavior and pre-sentence time. She was paroled to Bullhead City, Arizona, under specific conditions, including electronic monitoring, mental health assessments, a curfew, and a prohibition on owning firearms. Her parole was scheduled to conclude on May 23, 2026.
