What Happened to Houston Gamblers?

The Houston Gamblers first emerged as a professional American football team in 1984, joining the original United States Football League (USFL). Coached by Jack Pardee and featuring future NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, the team quickly gained notoriety for its innovative 'Run & Shoot' offense under offensive coordinator Darrell 'Mouse' Davis. In their inaugural 1984 season, the Gamblers achieved a 13-5 record, winning the Central Division, and set a league scoring record with 618 points. Despite their offensive prowess, they lost in the first round of the playoffs. The team continued in 1985 with a 10-8 record, again making the playoffs but losing in a close contest. The original USFL, and with it the Gamblers, folded in 1986 due to financial struggles and a failed antitrust lawsuit against the NFL.

Decades later, the Houston Gamblers name was resurrected as part of the relaunched USFL, with the team officially announced on November 22, 2021. Kevin Sumlin was named the head coach and general manager for the 2022 season. In this iteration, the Gamblers initially played their 'home' games in hub cities, first Birmingham, Alabama (2022), and then Memphis, Tennessee (2023), never actually setting foot in Houston under the Gamblers brand during this period. They finished the 2022 season with a 3-7 record and improved to 5-5 in 2023, qualifying for the postseason.

A significant turning point occurred with the merger of the USFL and XFL to form the United Football League (UFL) in 2024. As part of this merger, the Houston Gamblers franchise adopted the branding of the XFL's Houston Roughnecks, becoming the Houston Roughnecks for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. This move finally brought the Houston-based spring football team to play its home games in the city, utilizing Rice Stadium in 2024 and TDECU Stadium in 2025. The Roughnecks finished the 2024 season with a 1-9 record and improved to 5-5 in 2025, though they did not qualify for the playoffs.

However, the franchise's identity shifted once more. On October 7, 2025, the UFL announced that the team would revert to its historical name, the Houston Gamblers, for the 2026 season. This rebranding coincided with a move to Shell Energy Stadium in downtown Houston, a smaller venue intended to enhance the fan experience. Kevin Sumlin also returned as head coach for the 2026 season, replacing Curtis Johnson. As of April 5, 2026, the Houston Gamblers are actively competing in the UFL, having finalized their roster and made recent quarterback additions like Taulia Tagovailoa. Their 2026 season kicked off on March 27, and they are scheduled to play the Birmingham Stallions on April 5, 2026.
