The Jack Ryan franchise began with Tom Clancy's novels, introducing John Patrick Ryan, a former U.S. Marine, stockbroker, and history professor who becomes a CIA analyst. Clancy's first Jack Ryan novel, "The Hunt for Red October," was published in 1984, establishing Ryan as an intelligent, relatable spy rather than a traditional action hero.

The character first transitioned to the big screen in 1990 with "The Hunt for Red October," starring Alec Baldwin. Principal photography for the film began in January 2025 in London and wrapped in late July 2025. John Krasinski reprises his role, joined by Wendell Pierce as James Greer, Michael Kelly as Mike November, and Betty Gabriel as CIA Director Elizabeth Wright. Sienna Miller is a new addition to the cast, portraying MI6 officer Emma Marlowe. "Jack Ryan: Ghost War" is scheduled for a worldwide release on Amazon Prime Video on May 20, 2026. Furthermore, there are plans in development for a spin-off series focusing on the popular character Domingo Chavez, played by Michael Peña, who was introduced in Season 4 of the TV series.
