What Happened to Janel Grant?

Janel Grant's legal action against Vince McMahon, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), and former executive John Laurinaitis has brought to light extensive allegations of sexual assault, sex trafficking, and emotional abuse. Grant, who worked for WWE from 2019 to 2022, claims her employment was contingent on engaging in a sexual relationship with McMahon, which escalated to include forced sexual encounters with Laurinaitis and other unnamed WWE talents, as well as the sharing of explicit photos and videos of her with colleagues.

The genesis of the allegations traces back to March 2019 when Grant first met McMahon. She alleges that McMahon promised her a job, often greeting her in his underwear and asking for hugs, all while insisting on secrecy regarding their 'closeness.' Grant ultimately accepted a position at WWE in June 2019, believing her employment was predicated on a physical relationship with McMahon.

A significant turning point occurred in January 2022 when McMahon's wife, Linda McMahon, allegedly discovered their relationship. To avoid public scrutiny, McMahon reportedly coerced Grant into signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), promising her $3 million in payments, of which only $1 million was paid. Grant's lawsuit, filed in January 2024, seeks to void this NDA, citing the Speak Out Act and McMahon's failure to uphold payment terms. Following the lawsuit, McMahon resigned as Executive Chairman of TKO Group Holdings, WWE's parent company, for the second time.

The legal proceedings have been complex. In May 2024, Grant agreed to a six-month stay on her civil case at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), which initiated a criminal investigation into her allegations. This stay was lifted in December 2024, allowing her civil lawsuit to proceed. Grant made her first public comments in February 2026, discussing the profound impact of the NDA and expressing concerns for others still working at WWE.

As of April 2, 2026, the lawsuit remains highly active. Grant filed a 40-page declaration on April 1, 2026, opposing motions by WWE and McMahon to compel arbitration, arguing that the NDA is unenforceable and the case should proceed in public court. This recent filing includes new, detailed allegations. Grant claims McMahon told her in March 2021 that he had informed WWE President Nick Khan and former COO Brad Blum of the sexual nature of their relationship, and that they were 'ultimately supportive' after McMahon provided assurances about Grant's loyalty. Furthermore, Grant alleges McMahon revealed that former WWE General Counsel Brian Nurse was 'handled' (which she understood to mean terminated) after raising concerns about the relationship, identifying her as a 'corporate liability.' The court is yet to rule on the arbitration motions, and the civil case continues to unfold with these new revelations.
