What Happened to Lai Chee-ying (Jimmy Lai)?

Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, born in Guangzhou in 1947, arrived in Hong Kong as a stowaway at the age of 12. He built a successful clothing retail empire with Giordano before venturing into media, founding Next Magazine and the influential pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily. Lai became a prominent and outspoken critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) following the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, a stance that often led to political and commercial pressure on his businesses.

The imposition of the National Security Law (NSL) by Beijing in June 2020 marked a significant turning point in Lai's life and for press freedom in Hong Kong. He was first arrested on August 10, 2020, under the NSL for 'colluding with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security' and 'conspiracy to defraud'. This was followed by multiple arrests and bail revocations, leading to his continuous detention since December 31, 2020. His media company, Next Digital, and Apple Daily became prime targets of the authorities. In October 2022, he was convicted of fraud over an alleged lease violation and sentenced to five years and nine months, with all sentences running concurrently. The most significant legal proceedings concluded in December 2025, when the Hong Kong High Court found Lai guilty of two counts of 'conspiracy to commit collusion with foreign forces' under the NSL and one count of 'conspiracy to publish seditious publications' under the Crimes Ordinance. The court deemed him the 'mastermind' behind alleged conspiracies to engage in international lobbying and urge foreign governments to impose sanctions against the Chinese government.

On February 9, 2026, Lai, at 78 years old, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for these national security crimes, a sentence that effectively amounts to a life sentence given his age. His co-defendants, former Apple Daily employees, received sentences ranging from six years and nine months to 10 years. The Hong Kong government has defended the conviction, stating it upholds the rule of law and has nothing to do with press freedom, while international bodies and governments, including the US and UK, have strongly condemned the verdict as politically motivated and a travesty of justice.

As of May 14, 2026, Jimmy Lai remains incarcerated in Stanley Prison. His family and human rights advocates have raised serious concerns about his deteriorating health, citing heart problems, diabetes, and hypertension, exacerbated by prolonged solitary confinement. There are ongoing efforts by the Hong Kong government to confiscate HK$56.5 million and 17 companies linked to Lai on national security grounds, with a hearing scheduled for July 2026. His case continues to be a focal point for international discussions on human rights and press freedom in Hong Kong, with US President Donald Trump stating his intention to raise Lai's release during his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in May 2026.
