What Happened to Kaiir Elam?

Kaiir Elam's journey in the National Football League began with high expectations after being selected by the Buffalo Bills in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. The Bills even traded up to secure him, sending their 25th and 140th overall picks to the Baltimore Ravens. Elam, a standout cornerback from the Florida Gators, signed a four-year, $13.69 million fully guaranteed contract with Buffalo.

His rookie season in 2022 showed flashes of potential, as he recorded 41 total tackles, two interceptions (including one off Patrick Mahomes), and four passes defensed in 13 games. He also secured his first career playoff interception in January 2023 against the Miami Dolphins. However, Elam's subsequent seasons with the Bills were hampered by injuries and inconsistent play. In 2023, he was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury in November, though he was activated in late December. The 2024 season saw him play sparingly, and he notably struggled in the AFC Championship Game after an injury to Christian Benford, which was cited as a factor in the Bills' loss.

Seeking a change of scenery, Elam was traded by the Bills to the Dallas Cowboys on March 12, 2025, along with a 2025 sixth-round pick, in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round and 2026 seventh-round pick. He played a part-time defensive role for the Titans through the end of the 2025 season, earning a 56.8 overall PFF defensive grade, ranking 80th among 114 qualified cornerbacks. His coverage grade was 56.3, ranking 83rd, and he recorded no interceptions and one pass breakup in 2025.

As of April 2, 2026, Kaiir Elam has once again changed teams, agreeing to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs. This move comes as the Chiefs look to bolster their secondary after losing key cornerbacks.
