What Happened to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.?

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on January 5, 1911, at Indiana University Bloomington by ten African-American college students who sought to create an organization dedicated to achievement in an era of significant racial prejudice and discrimination. Initially named Kappa Alpha Nu, the fraternity was incorporated nationally on May 15, 1911, making it the first intercollegiate Black Greek-letter fraternity to be incorporated as a national body. The name was officially changed to Kappa Alpha Psi on April 15, 1915, partly due to the original name becoming an ethnic slur among racist factions. The fraternity's motto, "Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor," has guided its mission to unite college men of culture, patriotism, and honor, and to inspire service in the public interest.

Throughout its history, Kappa Alpha Psi expanded rapidly, establishing chapters across the United States and internationally. Key turning points include the establishment of its official magazine, The Kappa Alpha Psi Journal, in 1914, and the formation of the National Silhouettes, an auxiliary group for members' wives and widows, in 1947. The fraternity has also been a pioneer in addressing harmful practices, banning paddling and other forms of physical abuse in the early years and issuing joint statements with other National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations to eliminate pledging in 1990, reinforced by executive orders in the early 1990s.

In recent years, Kappa Alpha Psi has continued its philanthropic efforts through the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, established in 1981, which supports scholarships, after-school programs, and national projects like Habitat for Humanity and the United Negro College Fund. The Foundation reported giving over $383,000 in scholarships and grants in 2022 and has expanded partnerships with organizations like the NBA and Kaiser Permanente to fund Guide Right projects. The fraternity's flagship youth program, Guide Right, focuses on the educational and occupational guidance of youth, including mentoring and college preparatory initiatives.

However, the fraternity has also faced challenges, particularly concerning hazing. In November 2024, the Alpha chapter at Indiana University Bloomington was suspended until Fall 2027 due to allegations of dishonest conduct, endangering others, physical abuse, and hazing. Similarly, in April 2025, the Kappa Delta chapter at Miami University in Ohio received a 15-year suspension, effective until March 2040, following accusations of violent hazing against new recruits in Fall 2024. These incidents highlight the ongoing struggle within Greek-letter organizations to eradicate hazing and uphold their stated values.

As of July 2026, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. remains an active and influential organization. It held its 87th Grand Chapter Meeting (Conclave) in Phoenix, AZ, from July 1-6, 2025, focusing on leadership development and community impact initiatives. The fraternity was also honored with the ZERO Prostate Cancer Bold for Blue Awards' Partner-to-Impact Transformation Award in March 2026 for its efforts in prostate cancer awareness and education. The 2026 Undergraduate Leadership Institute (ULI) was scheduled for May 29 – June 6, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina, demonstrating a continued commitment to developing its members. The 88th Grand Chapter Meeting is already planned for July 6-11, 2027, in Baltimore, Maryland. The fraternity, through its national and local chapters and the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, continues to focus on community service, leadership, and academic achievement, striving to adapt and overcome challenges while staying true to its founding principles.
