What Happened to Kolkata Knight Riders?

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were founded in 2008 as one of the original eight franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team is co-owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment, actress Juhi Chawla, and her husband Jay Mehta. Their home ground is the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, which boasts a capacity of 68,000 spectators. Initially, the franchise experienced mixed results, with Sourav Ganguly serving as the icon player.

A significant turning point for KKR came with the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as captain in 2011. Under his leadership, the team underwent a major overhaul and achieved its first IPL championship in 2012, defeating Chennai Super Kings. They repeated this success in 2014, securing their second title by beating Kings XI Punjab. Beyond the IPL, KKR made a historic move on July 1, 2026, by unveiling the Knight Riders Cricket Ground at Fairplex in Pomona, Los Angeles. This $21 million venue marks KKR as the first cricket franchise globally to build and own its stadium. It will serve as the home for the Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket (MLC) and is also slated to host cricket matches for the LA 2028 Olympic Games, signifying KKR's ambitious expansion into the global cricket landscape.
