What Happened to Long Island Serial Killer (LISK)?

The Long Island Serial Killer (LISK) case refers to a series of unsolved murders that gained national attention in late 2010 and 2011, when police searching for missing escort Shannan Gilbert discovered the remains of ten victims along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach, Long Island, and in nearby areas. The victims, many of whom were sex workers, disappeared between 1993 and 2010. The initial discovery included the 'Gilgo Four'—Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello—whose bodies were found in close proximity in December 2010.

For over a decade, the case remained cold, with investigators struggling to identify a suspect despite extensive searches and public appeals. Key turning points began in 2022 with the formation of a new task force dedicated to reviewing old evidence and pursuing fresh leads. This renewed effort, combined with advancements in forensic DNA testing and meticulous analysis of cellphone data, proved crucial. Investigators linked a Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck, reported by a witness in connection with one victim's disappearance, to Rex Heuermann.

In July 2023, Rex Heuermann, a seemingly ordinary married father and architect from Massapequa Park, was arrested. DNA from a pizza crust he discarded in a Manhattan trash can was matched to genetic material found on several victims' remains, providing a critical breakthrough. He was initially charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. The case reached its culmination in April 2026 when Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven murders and admitted to an eighth, Karen Vergata, whose remains were found in 2011 and identified in 2022.
