What Happened to Luigi Nicholas Mangione?

Luigi Nicholas Mangione, born May 6, 1998, gained widespread notoriety following his accusation in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024, in Midtown Manhattan. Thompson was gunned down while walking to a hotel for a UnitedHealth Group conference. A note found on Mangione at the time of his arrest reportedly stated, “It had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming,” suggesting a motive tied to a deep-seated criticism of the health insurance industry. Additionally, police reported that the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose” – phrases often used by critics to describe how insurers avoid paying claims – were found written on the ammunition.

Mangione, a University of Pennsylvania graduate with degrees in computer engineering and information science, had a background in tech, including work as a data engineer for TrueCar. His seemingly privileged upbringing and academic success, juxtaposed with the alleged crime, contributed to his transformation into a cause célèbre. He was subsequently indicted on eleven New York state charges, including second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, and four federal charges, initially including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism and a death-penalty eligible federal murder charge.
