The Mad Max franchise began in 1979 with the low-budget Australian action film Mad Max, starring Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky, a police officer in a dystopian near-future Australia. Its success led to two sequels, Mad Max 2 (also known as The Road Warrior) in 1981, which cemented the franchise's post-apocalyptic aesthetic, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985, which saw Max navigating more established, albeit chaotic, communities.
