Manon Rhéaume's journey in hockey is marked by a series of historic firsts and a sustained commitment to the sport, particularly in advancing opportunities for women. Born in Beauport, Quebec, in 1972, Rhéaume began playing hockey at a young age, often with boys, and quickly distinguished herself as a talented goaltender. Her early career included becoming the first girl to play in the prestigious Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in 1984 and the first woman to play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) in 1991.

The pivotal moment in her career came in 1992 when she signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League (NHL), becoming the first woman to sign a professional hockey contract. On September 23, 1992, Rhéaume made history by playing in a preseason exhibition game for the Lightning against the St. Louis Blues, making her the first and only woman to play in an NHL game and in any major North American professional sports league. She played in another exhibition game for the Lightning in 1993. In October 2021, Rhéaume joined Bally Sports Detroit as an analyst and reporter for the Detroit Red Wings. In July 2022, she was hired by the Los Angeles Kings as a hockey operations and prospect advisor, a role she held for four seasons. On May 15, 2026, the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) announced her appointment as the General Manager of the newly formed PWHL Detroit expansion team.
