What Happened to Marco Antonio Rubio?

Marco Rubio's political career began in Florida, where he served as a City Commissioner for West Miami from 1998 to 2000, and then as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008, including a tenure as Speaker from 2006 to 2008. He rose to national prominence after being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, representing Florida. During his time in the Senate, Rubio established himself as a conservative voice, focusing on issues such as tax reform, national defense, and foreign policy, particularly concerning Latin America and China.

A significant turning point in Rubio's career was his bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. Despite being considered a rising star, his campaign struggled against Donald Trump, and he suspended his presidential run in March 2016 after losing the Florida primary. On May 1, 2025, he was also appointed as the acting National Security Advisor, a dual role last held by Henry Kissinger. He briefly served as acting Archivist of the United States until February 2026 and acting USAID Administrator until August 2025. His tenure has seen him implement an "America First" foreign policy agenda, advocating for U.S. companies and pressing NATO allies on defense spending.

In 2025, Rubio hosted the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Washington D.C. and undertook significant international travel, including to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Türkiye, Italy, and the Holy See. As of May 2026, Rubio continues to be highly active on the international stage. He attended a NATO foreign ministers' meeting in Sweden on May 22, 2026, aiming to reassure allies amidst discussions on U.S. troop reductions and NATO's future. He has also been deeply involved in U.S. policy towards Cuba, including the announcement of criminal charges against Raúl Castro and discussions of potential military intervention, and has been working on efforts to secure a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Iran. Speculation about a potential presidential run in 2028 has also resurfaced, given his prominent and effective role in the current administration.
