What Happened to Michigan Wolverines 'Fab Five'?

The Michigan Wolverines 'Fab Five' burst onto the college basketball scene in 1991, comprising five highly touted freshmen: Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson. They quickly became a cultural phenomenon, known for their baggy shorts, black socks, and confident demeanor, which challenged traditional norms in college sports. This unprecedented all-freshman starting lineup led the Wolverines to consecutive NCAA Championship games in 1992 and 1993, though they ultimately lost both.

However, their celebrated era was later overshadowed by the University of Michigan basketball scandal, also known as the Ed Martin scandal. It was revealed that booster Ed Martin had provided illicit payments and loans totaling over $600,000 to several Michigan players, including Chris Webber, Maurice Taylor, Robert Traylor, and Louis Bullock, between 1988 and 1999. Webber initially denied receiving payments but later confessed, leading to severe NCAA sanctions against the program. These penalties, announced in 2002 and 2003, included vacating all 113 victories from the 1992-93 through 1998-99 seasons, removing championship banners, imposing probation, and a 10-year disassociation period for Webber from the Michigan athletic program.

Following their college careers, the Fab Five members embarked on diverse paths. Chris Webber was the No. 1 pick in the 1993 NBA Draft and had a successful NBA career, earning five All-Star selections. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021. Jalen Rose enjoyed a 13-season NBA career and transitioned into a prominent role as a basketball analyst for ESPN and other networks. He also founded the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy in Detroit in 2011. Juwan Howard had a long NBA career and later returned to coach the Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team from 2019 until his firing in 2024. Jimmy King played briefly in the NBA before a longer career overseas and has since been involved in high school coaching, youth athletics, and business ventures. Ray Jackson, the only member not to play in the NBA, had a career in the Continental Basketball Association and overseas, and now runs a moving company and a non-profit organization focused on youth development in Austin, Texas.

The estrangement among the Fab Five, particularly with Webber due to the scandal, lasted for many years. However, reconciliation began, notably with their reunion at a Michigan basketball game in January 2024. The most recent and significant development, as of April 2026, is the full reunion of all five members for an alternate broadcast of the 2026 NCAA Final Four game between the Michigan Wolverines and the Arizona Wildcats on truTV and HBO Max. This event, taking place on April 4, 2026, symbolizes a complete healing of past rifts and a collective celebration of their enduring bond and impact on basketball. Jalen Rose is also slated to speak at the University of Michigan's spring 2026 commencement. Chris Webber returned to TNT Sports as a college basketball studio analyst in October 2025.
