What Happened to NCT?

NCT, an acronym for Neo Culture Technology, debuted in April 2016 under SM Entertainment with an unprecedented concept: an 'unlimited' number of members divided into various sub-units based in different cities around the world. This experimental approach allowed for diverse musical styles and global expansion, leading to the formation of units like NCT U, NCT 127, NCT Dream, and WayV.

The group's early years saw the successful establishment of its core units. NCT U, the rotational unit, debuted first on April 9, 2016. This was followed by the Seoul-based NCT 127 in July 2016 and the youth-oriented NCT Dream in August 2016. WayV, a China-based unit, debuted in January 2019, further expanding NCT's reach. In 2020, the 'graduation system' for NCT Dream, where members would leave upon reaching adulthood, was abolished, allowing the original seven members to continue promoting together.

Recent years have seen significant developments in NCT's structure and member lineup. Later in 2023, SM Entertainment announced that NCT WISH, which debuted in February 2024 as the Japan-based unit, would be the last sub-unit, officially ending the 'unlimited' expansion concept. They made a highly anticipated comeback with their seventh full-length album 'BLINGY' on August 24, 2026, and are set to embark on their 'NEO CITY – THE REDLINE' Asia tour starting September 2026. WayV also announced their 'BORN THIS Way' concert tour, kicking off in September 2026, following their eighth mini-album 'Vision Wings' release on August 10, 2026. Furthermore, all six current members of NCT Dream (Renjun, Jeno, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung, joining Haechan who had already renewed) officially renewed their contracts with SM Entertainment on August 20, 2026, ensuring their continued activities. NCT WISH is also slated for a busy year with a full-length album, a Japanese single, and another album release in 2026.

As of August 27, 2026, NCT continues to operate with its distinct sub-units, adapting to member changes and military enlistments while maintaining a robust schedule of music releases and tours.
