What Happened to Neverland Ranch?

Neverland Ranch, originally known as Zaca Laderas Ranch and later Sycamore Valley Ranch, was purchased by Michael Jackson in March 1988 for an estimated $19.5 million to $30 million. Jackson transformed the 2,700-acre estate in Los Olivos, California, into a fantastical private amusement park, complete with rides, a petting zoo, and three railroads, naming it after the magical island from Peter Pan. It served as both his home and a retreat where he hosted numerous children, including those with illnesses, reflecting his desire to reclaim a lost childhood.

The ranch's idyllic image was shattered by child sexual abuse allegations against Jackson, first in 1993 and more prominently leading to a highly publicized trial in 2005. Although Jackson was acquitted of all charges, the legal battles and intense media scrutiny deeply affected him. He left Neverland in 2005, vowing never to return, and indeed, he never did. The ranch subsequently fell into disrepair and faced financial difficulties, including foreclosure proceedings in 2007. In 2008, investment firm Colony Capital acquired Jackson's defaulted loan, entering into a joint venture with Jackson's estate, effectively becoming co-owners.

Following Jackson's death in 2009, efforts began to sell the property. In 2015, it was officially renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch and listed for sale at an ambitious $100 million, with many of Jackson's personal touches, including the amusement rides and zoo animals, having been removed or sold. The high asking price and the ranch's controversial past made it a difficult sell, leading to multiple price reductions over several years, dropping to $67 million in 2017 and $31 million in 2019.

In December 2020, billionaire businessman Ronald Burkle, a former associate and friend of the Jackson family, purchased the ranch for a significantly discounted $22 million. Burkle's spokesperson stated he viewed the acquisition as a 'land banking opportunity.' Since the purchase, there have been reports of restoration work on existing structures, with Burkle's entity, Sycamore Valley Ranch Company, listed as the owner. The property has not been developed into a Soho House location, as some initially speculated.

The most recent significant development occurred in April-May 2024, when Neverland Ranch was used as a major filming location for the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, 'Michael.' Film permits confirmed activities including dialogue, a petting zoo, and stunts, suggesting a recreation of the ranch's heyday. The film, starring Jaafar Jackson as Michael, premiered on April 24, 2026, bringing the iconic estate back into the public consciousness and offering a glimpse into its past splendor.
