What Happened to Otherside Metaverse?

The Otherside Metaverse, a highly ambitious project by Yuga Labs, the powerhouse behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection, was first announced in March 2022 with a trailer teasing an interoperable, gamified, and decentralized virtual world. The vision was to merge elements of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) with blockchain metaverses, allowing players to own virtual land called Otherdeeds, utilize various NFTs as playable avatars, and engage in a dynamic, player-built economy powered by ApeCoin (APE).

The initial launch of Otherdeed land NFTs in April 2022 was met with immense demand, generating over $320 million in sales within hours and famously causing Ethereum gas fees to skyrocket, leading to Yuga Labs issuing refunds for failed transactions. This event highlighted both the fervent interest in the project and the technical challenges of scaling blockchain-based metaverse initiatives. Despite the rocky start, the sale established Otherside as a significant player in the burgeoning metaverse space.

Throughout 2022 and 2023, Yuga Labs conducted several 'Trips' – scripted tech demos like 'First Trip' (July 2022) and 'Second Trip' (March 2023) – to allow Otherdeed holders to experience early versions of the metaverse and interact with its unique Koda creatures. These events showcased the platform's potential for large-scale multiplayer interactions, with the 'Second Trip' accommodating 7,000 concurrent players. A significant turning point came in November 2025 with the official launch of the Koda Nexus, the central social hub of Otherside, making it accessible via a web browser and email sign-up, with NFT ownership becoming optional for basic access. This launch was preceded by a partnership with Amazon Gaming for a co-branded 'Boximus' avatar drop in October 2025, signaling Yuga Labs' strategy for wider adoption and brand collaborations.

As of mid-2026, Otherside continues its aggressive development. In June 2026, Yuga Labs announced the integration of AI-powered world-building tools, allowing users to create 3D environments using simple text commands through the Otherside Development Kit (ODK). This initiative, alongside the unlocking of nearly 1,000 digital assets for ODK use, aims to lower the technical barrier for creators. New gaming experiences, including an 8v8 team shooter called 'Bathroom Blitz' and a stress-test event 'Otherside Outbreak,' were slated for July and August 2026, respectively.
