What Happened to Mark Anthony "Tony" Spell?

Pastor Mark Anthony "Tony" Spell, leader of Life Tabernacle Church in Central, Louisiana, first rose to national prominence in March 2020 for openly defying state-mandated COVID-19 stay-at-home orders by continuing to hold large in-person church services. He argued that these orders violated religious freedoms and that the virus was "politically motivated". This defiance led to his arrest in March 2020 on six misdemeanor counts for violating the governor's restrictions.

His controversies escalated in April 2020 when he was arrested for aggravated assault, accused of nearly hitting a protester with a church bus. This incident was reportedly captured by his neighbor's security system. During this period, a church member and one of his lawyers reportedly contracted COVID-19, with the member dying, though Spell disputed the cause of death. Spell also filed a federal lawsuit claiming his First Amendment rights were violated by state officials, but this case was dismissed by a federal court judge, and the dismissal was upheld by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in February 2023. The relationship with his neighbors, the Sherwin family, who live across from the church, has been contentious for years, marked by mutual complaints to police. In 2023, Spell added the Sherwin family to his lawsuit against state officials, alleging they conducted illegal surveillance on his church. This broader lawsuit was ultimately dismissed in 2024. Mrs. Spell also filed a report in March 2026 alleging road rage incidents involving the Sherwin's son, though no action was taken due to lack of evidence.

The long-standing feud culminated on June 23, 2026, when Spell was arrested and charged with second-degree battery. He allegedly ran across a highway to physically assault the 20-year-old son of the Sherwin family. Surveillance video reportedly captured the altercation, showing Spell punching the victim multiple times and throwing him to the ground. The victim required medical treatment, including stitches.

Spell maintains that his actions, particularly the recent altercation, were in defense of his family, citing alleged threats of rape and murder against his wife and grandchildren by the neighbor's son. The Sherwin family, however, denies these accusations and views the incident as Spell "lashing out" after recent legal setbacks. Spell's attorney also suggested a "law enforcement failure" in addressing their complaints against the neighbors. As of June 25, 2026, Pastor Tony Spell was released on a $25,000 bond following his arrest.
