What Happened to Qatar Airways?

Qatar Airways has solidified its position as a leading global airline, overcoming various challenges to achieve significant milestones. The airline's journey in recent years has been marked by strategic fleet management, robust financial performance, and adaptability in a dynamic geopolitical landscape.

One of the most significant developments was the resolution of a protracted legal dispute with Airbus concerning surface degradation on its A350 aircraft. After grounding numerous A350s and initiating legal proceedings in December 2021, an amicable and confidential settlement was reached in February 2023. This agreement paved the way for all A350 aircraft to be repaired and returned to service by March 2024, and importantly, reinstated previously canceled orders for Airbus A321neo aircraft, with deliveries anticipated to resume in 2026. This reconciliation was further emphasized by new CEO Hamad Al-Khater's early visit to Airbus headquarters in January 2026, signaling a renewed partnership.

Parallel to resolving its Airbus issues, Qatar Airways made a historic commitment to Boeing. In May 2025, the airline placed its largest-ever widebody order with Boeing, including 130 787 Dreamliners and 30 777-9s, with options for an additional 50 aircraft. This substantial order, which also included the largest widebody engine purchase in GE Aerospace history, underscores Qatar Airways' long-term growth strategy and its aim to operate a modern, fuel-efficient fleet of nearly 400 aircraft by 2040.

Financially, Qatar Airways Group announced its strongest results in history for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025. The group reported a net profit of QAR 7.85 billion (US$2.15 billion), marking a 28% increase from the previous year. This record performance was attributed to strong demand recovery, enhanced operational efficiency, strategic network expansion, and growth in its cargo division, which saw a 17% revenue increase.

Leadership also saw a change, with Hamad Ali Al-Khater appointed as the new Group Chief Executive Officer on December 7, 2025, succeeding Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer. Al-Khater, previously the Chief Operating Officer of Hamad International Airport, is expected to focus on balanced growth, fleet expansion, and strengthening airport-airline synergy.

Despite regional challenges, including airspace closures due to the Iran-Israel escalation in early 2025, Qatar Airways has demonstrated a rapid recovery and expansion of its network. As of April 2026, the airline has resumed daily services to the United Arab Emirates and Syria, and announced plans to expand its flight schedule to over 150 destinations across six continents by June 16, 2026, including new routes to Atlanta, Boston, and Los Angeles. The airline also continues to invest in sustainability, aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030 and IATA goals, by operating a young fleet and exploring sustainable aviation fuels. However, the airline is also facing an ongoing legal challenge in Australia regarding invasive searches at Hamad International Airport in 2020, with an appeal to the High Court underway as of August 2025.
