What Happened to Rainbow PUSH Coalition?

The Rainbow PUSH Coalition (RPC) emerged from a rich history of civil rights activism, rooted in Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.'s work with Operation Breadbasket, an initiative of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) under Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jackson founded Operation PUSH (People United to Serve Humanity) in 1971, focusing on improving economic conditions for Black communities through direct action and corporate accountability. In 1984, he launched the National Rainbow Coalition to address political empowerment and public policy issues, particularly after his presidential campaigns. These two organizations merged in 1996 to form the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, with a mission to protect, defend, and gain civil rights by leveling economic and educational playing fields and promoting peace and justice globally.

Throughout its existence, RPC has been a vocal advocate for affirmative action, voting rights, and economic justice, often challenging major corporations to increase minority representation in leadership, employment, and supplier networks. The organization has maintained headquarters in Chicago and established offices in several major U.S. cities, extending its reach and influence.

A significant turning point for the organization began in 2017 when Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. announced his diagnosis with Parkinson's disease. Despite his declining health, he continued his advocacy, making public appearances and remaining at the helm. In July 2023, Jackson announced his retirement as president, naming Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III as his successor. However, Haynes's tenure was brief; he resigned in April 2024, citing 'challenges that continue to exist' and a lack of autonomy to lead effectively.

In the wake of Haynes's departure, Jesse Jackson's son, Yusef D. Jackson, who had been serving as Chief Operating Officer, stepped into a more prominent leadership role. Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr.'s health continued to deteriorate, with his Parkinson's diagnosis being reclassified as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) in April 2025. He was hospitalized in November 2025 for the condition but was later released. The civil rights icon passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, at the age of 84, marking the end of an era for the organization and the broader civil rights movement.

Following his father's death, Yusef D. Jackson was unanimously appointed President and CEO of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition in April 2026, fulfilling his father's wishes for succession. Under Yusef Jackson's leadership, the organization has continued its work, hosting its annual convention in June 2026, which featured prominent speakers like Hillary Rodham Clinton, and focusing on themes of civic engagement, voting rights, and economic equity. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition remains committed to its foundational principles, actively engaging in voter mobilization campaigns and planning future events like the 29th Annual Wall Street Project Economic Impact Summit in October 2026, demonstrating its ongoing relevance and adaptation in the post-Jesse Jackson Sr. era.
