What Happened to Rex Andrew Heuermann?

Rex Andrew Heuermann, a seemingly ordinary Manhattan architect and resident of Massapequa Park, Long Island, became the central figure in the long-unsolved Gilgo Beach serial killings. The case, which had baffled investigators for over a decade, involved the discovery of numerous human remains along Ocean Parkway between 2010 and 2011, primarily belonging to women who worked as sex workers.

The breakthrough in the cold case came in January 2022 with the formation of a new Gilgo Beach Homicide Task Force. Investigators meticulously re-examined evidence, leading them to identify Heuermann as a suspect in March 2022 through his green Chevrolet Avalanche, a vehicle a witness reported seeing when one of the victims disappeared in 2010. In September 2025, a judge ruled that all seven murder cases against Heuermann would be tried together and that the cutting-edge DNA evidence would be admissible. Rex Heuermann is expected to plead guilty to the seven charged murders and an eighth, previously uncharged homicide, Karen Vergata, whose remains were found in 1996 and 2011.
