Roger Sweet, born on April 4, 1935, in Ohio, was an American toy designer whose creative vision profoundly impacted the entertainment industry. After graduating from Miami University and the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Sweet held design positions with various companies, including Walter Dorwin Teague Associates, where he worked on projects for Boeing, Rubbermaid, and Procter & Gamble.

His most significant career chapter began when he joined Mattel in 1972 as a lead designer in their Preliminary Design Department. In the late 1970s, after Mattel famously declined an opportunity to produce a toy line for 'Star Wars,' the company sought to develop its own male action figure franchise. He famously crafted the initial prototype by modifying a Big Jim action figure, adding clay to create a more muscular physique, and successfully pitched the 'generic barbarian' concept to Mattel's CEO, Ray Wagner.
