What Happened to Skype?

Skype emerged in 2003 as a groundbreaking Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service, co-founded by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. It quickly gained immense popularity by offering free computer-to-computer voice calls and later, video calls, fundamentally changing how people connected globally. Its ability to offer low-cost calls to traditional landlines and mobile phones (SkypeOut) further solidified its market position, making 'to Skype' a common verb.

In September 2005, eBay acquired Skype for $2.6 billion, aiming to integrate it with its e-commerce platform, though this synergy largely failed to materialize. By 2009, eBay divested a majority stake in Skype to an investor group led by Silver Lake for $1.9 billion, valuing the company at $2.75 billion. This period saw Skype file for an initial public offering (IPO) in August 2010, though it was later delayed.

The most significant turning point came on May 10, 2011, when Microsoft acquired Skype for a substantial $8.5 billion, its largest acquisition at the time. Microsoft integrated Skype into its ecosystem, including Xbox and Windows devices, and initially aimed to make it a central communication tool. For a time, Skype thrived, holding a significant share of the international call market by 2014.

However, the rise of new, more agile competitors like Zoom, Google Meet, and WhatsApp, coupled with Microsoft's own strategic shift, led to Skype's gradual decline. These newer platforms often offered cleaner interfaces, better video quality, and features more tailored for remote work and business collaboration. Microsoft itself launched Teams in 2017, a comprehensive collaboration platform that began to overshadow Skype, particularly in the business sector. Skype for Business Online was retired in 2021, with users migrating to Teams.

By February 2025, Microsoft officially announced the retirement of the consumer Skype service, effective May 5, 2025, to streamline its communication offerings and prioritize Teams as its unified platform. Users were directed to Microsoft Teams Free, where their contacts and chat histories were automatically transferred if they were active users between December 2024 and February 2025 and moved to Teams Free by December 1, 2025. The 60 minutes of Skype calls included with Microsoft 365 subscriptions were removed in March 2026. All Skype Number subscriptions ended in May 2026. The final deadline for users to export their Skype data was June 15, 2026, after which remaining data was deleted. While the standalone consumer application is no longer actively supported, the Skype Dial Pad remains functional for users with existing credit balances for outgoing calls, though new credit purchases are no longer possible. Skype for Business Server (for versions 2015 and 2019 with Extended Security Updates) continued to receive updates until April 2026. As of August 30, 2026, Skype exists primarily as a legacy brand, with its core functionalities absorbed or superseded by Microsoft Teams and other communication platforms.
