What Happened to Smartmatic SGO Group?

Smartmatic, officially known as Smartmatic SGO Group, was founded in 2000 by Venezuelan engineers Antonio Mugica, Alfredo José Anzola, and Roger Piñate, initially incorporated in Delaware before establishing its headquarters in London, UK. The company quickly rose to prominence by providing electronic voting systems, first gaining significant attention for its role in Venezuela's 2004 referendum that confirmed Hugo Chávez as president. Smartmatic expanded its global footprint, acquiring Sequoia Voting Systems in 2006, though it later divested its stake in 2007.

Over the years, Smartmatic has been a key player in modernizing elections in nearly 40 countries across five continents, processing over 6.5 billion votes without a reported security breach. However, its operations have been marred by controversy. In 2016, Smartmatic faced accusations of altering a script on an election server during the Philippine national elections, though the case was later dismissed.
