What Happened to United Football League (UFL)?

The United Football League (UFL) emerged as the latest attempt to establish a sustainable professional spring football league in the United States, officially forming in December 2023 through the merger of the XFL and the United States Football League (USFL). This consolidation was driven by the recognition that previous spring football ventures, including earlier iterations of both the XFL and USFL, often struggled due to fragmented markets and insufficient resources. The 2024 season generally exceeded internal expectations, averaging 850,000 total viewers per game and reaching 32 million unique viewers, with Fox Sports executives noting the league was ahead of its expected pace towards self-sustenance.

A key turning point occurred in July 2025 when billionaire entrepreneur Mike Repole, known for co-founding Vitaminwater and Bodyarmor, joined the UFL's ownership group through his private equity firm, Impact Capital. Repole assumed direction of the league's business operations, bringing a new vision for brand development and long-term growth. This change coincided with the 2025 UFL season, which began on March 28, 2025, and concluded on June 14, 2025, with the DC Defenders winning the championship. However, the 2025 season experienced a significant decline in viewership, dropping 20% to an average of 645,000 viewers per game, and attendance also decreased by 5% across most markets, with the exception of Michigan.

In response to these trends and under Repole's leadership, the UFL implemented major changes for its 2026 season. Announced in October 2025, three new franchises – the Columbus Aviators, Louisville Kings, and Orlando Storm – replaced the Memphis Showboats, Michigan Panthers, and San Antonio Brahmas. Additionally, the Arlington Renegades were rebranded as the Dallas Renegades, and the Houston Roughnecks became the Houston Gamblers, with both teams moving to new venues. The league also shifted from a two-conference structure to a single-table standings format for the 2026 season, which kicked off on March 27, 2026. As of May 23, 2026, the 2026 UFL season is in its ninth week, with games actively being played. The league has also announced plans for future expansion, including an Oklahoma City team in 2028 and a long-term goal of reaching 16 teams by 2035.
