What Happened to Walt Disney World Resort?

Walt Disney World Resort has experienced a dynamic period of transformation and adaptation from the early to mid-2020s, marked by significant new attractions, strategic operational shifts, and ambitious future development plans. Following the extensive 50th Anniversary Celebration, which concluded on March 31, 2023, the resort continued its investment in guest experiences.

One of the most anticipated additions was TRON Lightcycle / Run, a high-speed roller coaster that officially opened in Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland on April 4, 2023, after delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was followed by the debut of Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana, a walk-through attraction at EPCOT's World Nature, which officially opened on October 16, 2023, as part of the park's ongoing transformation. A major reimagining saw Splash Mountain close to be re-themed as Tiana's Bayou Adventure, based on "The Princess and the Frog," which opened in Magic Kingdom on June 28, 2024.

Operationally, Disney World has continued to refine its guest services. In July 2024, the Genie+ service underwent significant changes, being rebranded as Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass. This update introduced the ability for guests, particularly those staying at Disney resorts, to make advance selections for Lightning Lane access up to seven days prior to their visit, aiming to provide more planning flexibility. The resort has also seen ongoing adjustments to entertainment, with Fantasmic! at Disney's Hollywood Studios returning in late 2022 with new sequences and adjusting its showtimes in early 2026.

Looking ahead to 2026, Walt Disney World is actively engaged in numerous projects. Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom reopened on April 8, 2026, with significant upgrades, including new show scenes, updated ride vehicles, and enhanced blasters. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is also expected to reopen in early May 2026 after a refurbishment. EPCOT is set to debut "Soarin' Across America" on May 26, 2026, celebrating the USA's 250th anniversary. Disney's Hollywood Studios will see a new mission for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu, opening May 22, 2026, and the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is being reimagined to feature The Muppets, opening in Summer 2026. Additionally, Disney's Animal Kingdom will introduce a new Bluey and Bingo experience at Conservation Station on May 26, 2026. There are also plans for major transportation overhauls, including expanded ferryboat queues at Magic Kingdom and stricter bus policies at Disney Springs, implemented as of March 29, 2026, to enhance efficiency and guest flow.

Financially, domestic park attendance saw a 1% increase in Q1 2026 (ending December 27, 2025), recovering from a decline in the prior year period attributed to Hurricane Milton. Per capita guest spending at domestic parks grew 4%. While some reports in late 2025 and early 2026 speculated about potential attendance dips due to ongoing construction and price adjustments, Disney's Q1 2026 earnings showed positive trends in attendance and spending, with resort occupancy also increasing. The resort continues to focus on yield over volume, utilizing dynamic pricing and premium experiences. Long-term plans, extending beyond 2026, include potential new themed lands focusing on Disney Villains, Cars, Monsters, Indiana Jones, and Encanto, signaling a continued aggressive expansion strategy.
